A QR code on a poster faces two problems that a code on a screen does not. It has to be physically large enough to scan from wherever people will stand, and once it is printed you have no way of knowing whether anyone used it. This generator addresses both.
The sizing calculator applies the standard rule of thumb — a code should be at least one tenth of the intended scanning distance — and then adjusts for density. That adjustment matters: a long tracked URL produces a higher QR version with more modules packed into the same square, so each module is physically smaller and the whole code needs to be printed larger to stay readable. A short URL at version 3 and a long one at version 10 are not interchangeable at the same print size, and this is where most unscannable printed codes come from.
The UTM builder makes the scan measurable. Because the parameters are encoded into the pattern itself, every scan of that printed piece arrives in your analytics tagged with its source, and you can run different codes on a poster, a flyer and a receipt and compare them. This is a static code, so there is no redirect service in the middle that can expire or start charging — the trade-off is that the destination is fixed once it is printed.
The export is calculated in real pixels for your print resolution and rounded up to a whole number of modules, so no module is resampled to a fractional size when the file is placed in a layout. Error correction defaults to M and should be raised to Q or H for anything handled, outdoors, or carrying a logo over the centre.

Note how the density adjustment works. The bare rule of thumb would give 15 cm for a 1.5-metre distance, but the tracked URL pushes the code to version 7, so the recommendation rises to 20.5 cm. Untick the UTM parameters and the same code drops to version 4 and a 16 cm minimum — a real trade-off between measurability and physical size that is worth making deliberately.
Frequently asked questions
How big does a printed QR code need to be?
At least one tenth of the scanning distance, and larger for denser codes. A code read from two metres needs roughly 20 cm; one on a business card held at 30 cm needs about 3 cm. This tool adjusts the figure for how many modules your URL actually produces.
Should I use a shortener to keep the code simple?
It genuinely helps — a shorter URL means fewer modules and a code that scans from further away or prints smaller. The cost is that you depend on the shortener staying alive, and a printed code cannot be changed. For a long print run, a short URL on your own domain is the best of both.
Can I track scans without a redirect service?
Yes, that is what the UTM parameters do. They are encoded in the code itself, so the visit arrives at your site already tagged and appears in your analytics under that source. No third party sits in the middle, and nothing can expire.
What error correction level should I use for print?
M for clean indoor print on paper. Q for anything handled, folded or outdoors. H if you are placing a logo over the centre — it tolerates 30% damage, which covers a mark up to about a fifth of the code's width. Higher levels make the pattern denser, so print larger.
