What the meme Generator does

The classic meme format is a specific typographic convention: heavy condensed type, usually Impact, set in capitals, in white with a thick black outline, anchored to the top and bottom edges of the image. The outline is the important part — it is what keeps white text readable over a bright sky or a pale face, which is why the format survived twenty years of internet culture largely unchanged.

This generator reproduces that convention and lets you deviate from it. Text size is set as a percentage of the image height rather than in pixels, so the same setting looks right whether the source is a small screenshot or a full-resolution photograph. Long captions wrap automatically at 92% of the image width, with each line stroked and then filled so the outline never covers the letters. Fill and outline colours are both adjustable, and the uppercase toggle can be turned off if the joke needs sentence case.

Impact ships with Windows and macOS, so it will render for most people; on Linux and on devices without it, the tool falls back to Arial Black and then to a generic sans-serif, which is close enough that the format still reads. Georgia and Comic Sans are there for the formats that call for them.

Images are rendered at up to 1400 pixels on the long edge, which keeps the output sharp on a retina screen without producing an unnecessarily large PNG. Nothing is uploaded, there is no watermark on the download, and there is no gallery your meme gets published to.

How to use it

1. Drop in your base image.
2. Type the top and bottom captions. They wrap automatically if they are long.
3. Adjust size, colour and font if the defaults do not suit the image.
4. Download the finished PNG — no watermark is added.

A worked example

A wide screenshot, 1600 × 900, with a two-line bottom caption. At the default 10% text size the type is 90 pixels tall, which is right for a caption meant to be readable in a feed thumbnail. The bottom caption wraps to two lines and the whole block grows upward from the bottom edge rather than overflowing off it.

Two adjustments are worth knowing. On a busy photograph, raising the outline contrast — pure white fill on pure black stroke — keeps the text legible where a grey outline would disappear. On a very tall portrait image, dropping the text size to 6–7% stops a long caption from covering the subject, because the size is measured against the image's height and a portrait image has a lot of it.
